About the Dish:

Beef heart is an organ meat

Organ meats are very beneficial and contain loads of nutrients!

I didn’t get into organ meats until becoming animal-based because I was not aware of how beneficial they are.

If you are strict carnivore it is important to eat “nose to tail” (eating every edible part of an animal, not just high value cuts), so that you don’t need additional supplementation (which are usually synthetic vitamins that your body cannot process the same anyway). However, I think anyone can benefit from eating organ meats and could possibly replace their multivitamins/supplements with them!

You can buy beef heart from a local butcher, farmer, or online. Some specialty grocery stores may have them but usually not the chain grocery stores.

You can cook beef heart several ways such as:

searing, grilling, slow cooking, or roasting.

I have not personally tried any of these methods yet! I am here to show you how to “hide” beef heart in your diet and make a super simple addition to what you might be already consuming.

I am not opposed to eating beef heart in any of the above mentioned ways, I just have not taken the time to try it yet!

When I started buying 1/4 cow I received some and I have so many roasts/steaks to enjoy that I just said, let me grind this and add it to my weekly meatloaf, easy!

People who eat it like a steak say it tastes similar to sirloin texture with a hint of game taste.

Beef heart contains high levels of iron, protein, selenium, zinc, complex B vitamins, folate, and riboflavin.

This organ is a great addition for anyone, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or low in any of the above nutrients.

Equipment:

Ingredients:

  • Beef heart

Steps:

  1. Thaw your beef heart fully in the refrigerator (this will likely take 2 days).

  2. Slice your beef heart into long medium thick strips (whatever will easily fit into your meat grinder)- see pictures and video

  3. Turn your meat grinder on and start grinding your beef heart-following the operator instructions for your machine

  4. Once you have ground all of the heart, store it in your desired amount using a scale and freeze until ready to use. I like to make 1lb bags.

  5. Add this ground beef heart to your ground beef meals (burgers, meatloaf, tacos, etc).

  6. Go to my Carnivore Meatloaf to use your beef heart now!
